[...One of those points is not like the others. For what it's worth, it manages to stir an emotion out of her through the shock that's neither anger or grief? Even if what it is instead is hard to figure out; the look on the face she turns to him is just weird, like she's just sniffed out a particularly smelly sock.
Turn her clothes and body to— Okay, Rin actually finds it fascinating he can do that. BUT:]
If you think I'm going to let you get that close and personal with Sakura, Mr. The-Wind-Tells-Me-Things, you've got another thing coming.
[She absolutely would have for the record, and were this any other time and place, delighted in his sulking. It's a rare sight with him worthy of a victory lap, or at least a good chortle, but the sound that bubbles from her mouth is more akin to a weak hiccup.
...Yet still. It's watery and falls almost as soon as it twitches into place, but that was a smile.
Wiping at her nose with her sleeve, Rin reaches quietly for the napkin he'd offered before. He's right; it will work for cleaning up Sakura at least, though it would be better if it were wetted. She'd hoped there'd be a bathroom up here a basin, but no such luck. Melted snow it is, as he suggested, though some things are on their side.]
There's a fireplace downstairs, actually. And a stove and kettle of all things. [She'd seen them when she was here with Sans the other day. This house is so strange.] Those can be used to quickly melt the snow and wave the chill out.
[Because that can't be good for her. A cool cloth to lay on her forehead, however, would be worthwhile. Rin wonders if she could find anything like that in the place she saw the kettle. Medicine would be smart as well, but specially made for a mage's sensitivities. She can't just stroll into the infirmary and find some; it would have to be specially made. That's something for when she has wits better collected, Rin decides.
But she is feeling more steady than she was moments ago. Since Zaveid arrived, she's been able to think more clearly...
Sakura's ragged gasps continue to break the silence, but this time it sparks an idea.]
Zaveid, is there anything you can do to ease her breathing?
I can clear her lungs out then see if she needs me to keep her breathing slow and steady after that. [ He doesn't really have a better way to say that. But gasping can be because she isn't exhaling properly, and he can give her a clean start on that.
But it probably will sound as scary as it sounded, so- ]
D'ya wanna get the stove going, and I can get snow after I fix her breathing?
[Rin nods and turns to go, but hesitates at the lip of the stairs before descending. Her hand lightly braced on the rail, a nagging thought making her look back at the pair.]
Zaveid? Don't do anything more intrusive than is necessary.
[This isn't like before. There's concern written on her face, in the place of untoward suspicions.]
She's weak. The membranes of her organs might have been damaged, so... Treat her gently, is what I'm saying.
[That's the most she's comfortable revealing about Sakura's condition to him, even if it begs the question of how something so extensive could happen in the first place. But it's important, so as to not make her worse; not just in light of the damage she mentioned, but knowing what inside her caused it.
If there is something to be cleared out in there, it's likely a mucus the worms would secrete to rapidly decompose Sakura's flesh for easier consumption, and what they chewed but didn't finish eating. It's a unique kind of damage, and the worms are still in there.
But Zaveid is the wind, is magic. If it's anything like hers, Sakura's body should respond more naturally to one of the Five Great Elements of their world and the energy infused in it than she would a modern medical treatment. The medicine used in such procedures too often get treated by their bodies as a poison, thanks in part to the sensitivities of a Magic Crest.
For the few moments they had switched bodies, Rin had been able to tell the worms in Sakura would be even more sensitive to such things. So with all of her options on the table, Zaveid's help stands out to her as the clear best and least likely to cause Sakura further discomfort. As long as he's careful, she doesn't think it should rile them up further.
Discovery remains less of a certain thing if they react to even that gentle invasion of the wind, but Rin can think of nothing else to minimize the chances.]
[ ... He needs to read up on some medical books? Organs have skin?
So yeah, it takes a second for him to sort of get that - organs are delicate, be extra careful. ]
... And you two have a handle on it, somehow, huh. [ ... Because apparently that's not the worst thing going on with Sakura today?? ]
But yeah, yeah, gentle breezes, I got it.
[ He was actually thinking there was something up with her not being able to exhale properly, rather than anything in there, but he steps up to settle near her head level, and perhaps ominously, put his hand a half inch or so over her mouth and nose.
And honestly, nothing really visibly happens. He's just carefully push in good, clean air until clean air starts coming back out or... something else does. ]
[Footsteps echo from the stairwell in this otherwise quiet house, and her voice with it. Reminding him.]
You're the one who decided to stay.
[Even if she puts it like that she doesn't think he'll leave now, but she lets the point stand. She didn't ask for his help in the first place, and if he doesn't like the way she handles things, no one's making him stay.
It doesn't matter that now that she has it, she's not sure what she'd do without his help. If he did go, she'd find a way on her own. Plus, Zaveid has no obligation as far as she's concerned. She wouldn't begrudge him any for getting fed up with everything she can't or doesn't know how to say.
And more that, as his Shepherd, today she must be quite the disappointment to him.
Rin walks down the first floor to heat the stove without another word.]
[...Rin doesn't reply back to it or give any sign that she heard, but that takes a good deal of the fight out of her. It's getting harder and harder to keep snapping at him.
The preparations downstairs don't take long. Rin gets the fireplace going, and works a spell to move the heat throughout the treehouse more quickly. Where normally it wouldn't likely reach the second floor, soon the bedroom will be as toasty as if the fireplace were there instead.
The stove (also wood burning) is tackled next, and she searches the cupboards as it gets going. She finds a large water pitcher filled with frozen water that will need to be dumped out, as well as the tea kettle she saw before.
The former was brought back up to Zaveid without much comment from Rin. Switching places at Sakura's side, she'd let him gather the snow and melt it down. The whole affair took about fifteen minutes, and now both have returned.
While her clothes are still stained (she has a spell for that she can use later), the blood has been wiped clean from Sakura's jaw and face. Rin's hand too, leaving nothing more than an angry red line as her flesh starts to knit back together. The floors and walls she'll worry about another time, as well as the blade she saw brought in from the snow. Currently, they're on their second clean kettle of water, used to wet down a dish cloth Rin found in the kitchen which she lays now on her sister's head.
Aside from where instruction was needed, she hasn't said much since she first left the room. With guilty glances replacing harsh words when she thinks Zaveid is looking, and a melancholic air around her so thick it could be a blanket, she just efficiently sees to each task and the next. The fight is definitely bleeding out of her.]
[ For someone so chatty, Zaveid seems pretty comfortable with working in silence. Maybe it's because he's still focused on Sakura's breathing, a thick breese flowing from him to her.
Or maybe he thought it would help Rin.
... it's not helping Rin. ]
I'm not mad. You can stop looking at me like you chewed on my shoes. [ Zaveid carries a chair over then finds himself another to plonk into.]
You said her organs were in rough shape, but we're focusing on the fever. So, you aren't worried about that. Means you've got a handle on it, since the fevers more of the problem.
[Well he's not the only one she has to feel guilty about, is he? There's one person in the room she can't look in the face at all.
But if Zaveid is trying to get into her good graces, he's doing well with the compliment. He's slightly off, but the confidence isn't misplaced, and to Rin it feels in its own way nostalgic to have such a partner again.]
By comparison the fever is the lesser issue, but it's an outward symptom. That makes it easier to treat.
[So her insides are still the problem, namely just for that. They're inside.
But Zaveid is right in one way still; Rin does have a plan. Tapping a knuckle to her chin, the focus she turns to the floor is one of someone deliberating on how to solve a problem.
Without looking up, she says an absurd thing in a perfectly straightforward way.]
To tell you the truth, I'd have liked to have stabilized her first, but I'm not sure how to go about shoving a jewel down an unconscious person's throat.
[...
...
...Seriously, though. Would a quick jab be enough to force it down her esophagus? Open wide and push?]
[ Remember how you asked if he was a black sheep? ]
Depends on the cut and the size.
[ Absolutely no hesitation in that answer. ]
I have a bit of power over gems, with how wind trumps earth. I could probably push one through on the wind, if the size is good. If it's small enough, water and treat it like medicine.
Reaching for the bag at her side, Rin retrieves an emerald from within it (about the size of the largest in this image). If he tunes his senses, Zaveid might recognize that the gem is rich with concentrated magical energy.]
I specialize in jewel magecraft. By storing my mana in a jewel for many days, weeks, and months, I create a magic bullet that can be used to cast high-powered spells.
[Long fingers fold over the emerald, and she looks up to Zaveid.]
In other words, once it's inside of her, I can trigger it and activate a healing spell targeting the worst of the damage.
[It'll be whiplash on her immune system, that said. Rin estimates she'll still have 1-2 weeks of recovery under her belt, but that's an improvement compared to the alternative.]
[ A low whistle. Yeah, he can.. kinda tell how much magic she's put into that. ]
Way better than I can do.
[ Zaveid's healing is shit tier healing spells. You want his healing magic for the boosts it gives, rather than the actual healing, honestly.
He steps over, trying to remember the size of the emerald with the wind and studying Sakura. ]
Tilt her right, should be fine. Maybe a bit of a scratchy throat, but then you're gunna blast healing at her so she.. might not notice, really. Until the whole healing inside out thing happens, or if she wakes up in the middle.
[ Because really, someone WOULD wake up in the middle of having a gem shoved down their throat. It's like Murphy's Law, or so he's read. ]
[If she were to be honest, this is another way in which Kirei would be useful. If you were to compare their talent, on any given day she would best him by 200%, but if you were to narrow it down to their talents in a single area... Well, then Rin could readily admit the fake priest's talent for spiritual surgery surpasses her own.
Surpassed, rather. Kirei's dead, and Rin considers herself no slouch on the basics. This won't be pretty, but it will be efficient.]
Let's hope not... [Rin mutters, but knows the chance is much higher than zero.
Sliding her hand beneath Sakura's shoulder she props her up, catching the wet towel when it slips. The young girl's head drops heavily but Rin readjusts it, and forces her mouth as wide open as she can manipulate it, pinching her cheeks roughly to pull her mouth into the proper shape.
Balanced between two fingers, the emerald is positioned in front of the 'o' of Sakura's mouth as if to line up a shot.]
[ Or someone will walk in to two people holding an unconscious girl and shoving a gem down her throat. Something like that would happen.
Zaveid tilts his head, and the air about Rin and Sakura stirs, before Zaveid reaches over and taps the gem with two fingers, just a tiny adjustment of its flight path. ]
Yup~.
[ It might feel a tiny bit lighter, as he leans back, the wind stirring about her fingers. ]
Three, two, one. [ And slowly enough that if for some reason she has second thoughts about shoving a gem down a girls throat, she's got time to say it.
Except right after one, yep, forward down Sakura's throat goes the stone, with a little flick up of the hand Zaveid had poked it with.
... Hopefully she won't choke, but that's what the guiding wind is there to prevent. Just a bit of burping later. Probably. ]
[Sakura has not so much as stirred since being placed on the bed. Almost corpse-like, except her limbs are pliant instead of rigid, and her gaze flutters continuously behind the cover of her eyelids.
That doesn't change when the jewel flies down her throat. The intrusion is noted immediately by the hosts inside her body, sentient in their own right and always on the alert to protect the Matou heir as their personal feeding ground, but the jewel is only a cut of concentrated mana. No spell has been activated yet, and it doesn't carry with it the sting of modern medicine. Sakura's eyelids flutter again, but she doesn't wake.
Instead, her body begins to twitch, unbidden reflexes and jumping muscles, because - well, that's a concentrated piece of mana, and Rin's blood was only an appetizer meant to convince the worms not to make a mess of their nest. Now that there's the potential for a new feast, the worms wrapped around the Matou girl's nerves are kept in check not by her willpower, but strangeness of the invasion. If nothing happens soon, they'll move to devour this gift]
[They won't get the chance. Not because Rin is intentionally denying them of it, mind — still an utter surprise to her, she's learned many things about the worms quickly (so much she wishes she hadn't) , but there are aspects she's failed to consider. The alien twitching gets mistaken for reflex to the intrusion.
So rather, the product of years of the Matou line's magecraft will be denied this offering by Rin's prudent nature. Rarely does a gem leave her side if it's not intended to be used instantly. And this is all for Sakura's sake.
Dropping her hand from her sister's jaw, Rin's palm hovers without touching in a trail downwards, following the emerald's descent from throat to sternum. Her fingers splay wide.]
Ein Stich, ein Naht. [The German incantation is hissed, and unseen to both of them, the gem inside Sakura glows white hot.] Zünden!
[In an instant, Rin's magic bullet shatters, the emerald casing and the magical properties of the ore are completely consumed by the magical energy inside of it. It transforms that energy, and leaves no harmful trace to hurt Sakura further.
Ignited, the spell spreads out throughout Sakura like a shockwave, her body visibly glowing for a few short seconds. It finds and touches all of the little holes the worms chewed through her — organ, muscle, and tissue — and begins working to sew each wound shut.]
[Rin's magecraft, even when meant to heal, is still greeted by a visceral reaction. Sakura's body draws taunt as if pulled by invisible strings, the worms inside her restless when mana is traded for a spell. But then the twitching stops entirely by the time the glow has faded from her cheeks. The girl's tense breathing seems to come a little easier, her expression smoothed into a wash of exhaustion that's free of immediate pain.
The fever will remain for some time, but it's the price of a panicked immune system. Meanwhile the body will continue to mend from the inside until every hole is closed, and the Matou crest quiets once more.]
[Luckily the damage wasn't more serious than that. Posed over her in the snow, to Rin, Sakura's agonized screams and convulsions had seem to stretch in slow motion. In reality, she realizes it was probably but a matter of seconds.
If it had been longer, had the worms done more, Rin's not certain the healing spells at her disposal would be enough. Watching the lines of Sakura's face relax comes as a relief to her, a reassurance that's not the case.
It doesn't make her breathe easier, though there is a sad smile on her face in its place. Proud of the outcome maybe, or relieved. She knew it would work, of course, just as surely as her heart echoes the sentiment of Zaveid's words.
Quiet hangs heavy in the air, Rin's expression unchanging.]
...It was unavoidable.
[Yeah, thinking back on it, there was no better outcome.]
If anything, one of us should be dead.
[A statement like that just invites more questions, but she probably owes answers to Zaveid by this point anyways if he chooses to ask that much.
Gently, Rin lowers Sakura back down to the bed, smoothing the hair from her forehead to reapply the cool cloth.]
She tried to kill me. [Rin says this plainly, as if it doesn't effect her at all. It doesn't actually. Not that part.]
Sakura was trying to save herself. [In more ways than one.] I came out to the roof with the intention of killing her myself, so it's not like I can begrudge her at all.
[And while that confession stirs something pained within her that she doesn't show on her face, it doesn't match the intensity of what was upsetting her before.]
