Rin Tohsaka
Hi, you've reached Rin Tohsaka. Sorry I missed your call; my phone and I are currently playing hide and seek, and I'm sad to say it's winning!
Please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and I promise to call you back. Thank you.

But call it the holiday spirit (or just an unwillingness to lose), she's determined to find the perfect gift for everyone on her list. Everyone. Which, given the sudden lack of taste senses, has resulted in multiple trips to one of Recolle's largest malls, scouring bargain bins and trying to figure out how tacky it would be if she just got everyone the same knitted scarf marked 75% off.
It doesn't matter for long - someone buys them before she comes to a decision. It's probably for the best, but feeling the sting of that defeat, she trudges out of the small outlet store and back into the main building. Glancing up, the ceiling is decked out in festive ornaments hung from the rafters, and the booths dotted along the walkways have at least one reef stuck against their display glasses.
But the real jewel of the mall has to be the meet-and-greet with Santa, Sakura assumes. "Assumes", because she sure can't see the jolly old man dressed in red from her vantage point, likely hidden behind what seems like an endless line of fidgety children and grumpy adults. A couple of Christmas workers dressed as elves are herding the slow-moving stampede, and Sakura's heart ached for them in that moment. She'd learned not to be a stickler when it came to finding income, but oh, that has to be high on the list of jobs she'd never take]

This job has been surprisingly rewarding most of the time, since Rin signed on, but the last stretch is definitely the most hectic. Going by one customer making plans with someone over her cellphone, however, it seems to be just about ten minutes until her shift is up and she can take off. Until then, though, there are still children to entertain. She's been feeling lightheaded for a couple hours now, overheated in the velvet hat and costume, but that just makes her act more animated to compensate.]
My name? Ooh, what a polite little boy you are! I think someone might be on Santa's Nice List~ [The bell on her hat jingles as Rin crouches down to the child's level, cupping her cheeks.] I'm Sugarplum. What's your name?
[The boy tells her excitedly, asking if he can see the list too, and Rin has to laugh merrily and tell him only Santa is allowed to look, she just makes the toys. Did he like his presents last year? Oh yes, she thinks Snickerdoodle worked on that one! Snickerdoodle is an old friend of hers; she'll pass the message along. The little boy moves on to Santa, and the girl behind him peers at her shyly. Hm? Why is she so tall?]
Well you see, when elves leave the North Pole, we grow three feet taller! [Rin raises a hand to indicate size, holding back a laugh as the girl's eyes grow wide.] Back home, I'm only juuuust about as big as you.

...
It's been four months -- no, five with December nearly being over, and that does not include the days and months and years spent living in Japan while her sister pranced overseas for her education. It'd been a silly thought, stupid and driven with the fear of both memories and nightmares, but Sakura had sometimes worried she'd forget what her own flesh and blood looked like. That maybe Rin would be pulled into Retrospec's vortex and spat back out as some creature with blue hair and three eyes.
The velvet costume is so mundane in comparison that Sakura feels insulted looking at it.]
Nee-san. [Not even spoken loud enough to be heard over the dull roar of the crowd, so that Rin doesn't look in her direction is no surprise. It's still another notch in the calendar, more seconds of her sister apparently being completely okay despite all of Sakura's reservations! Dressed up as a jolly elf, in fact, playing with kids and passing them off to Santa's lap.]
Nee-san. [With a bit more added something now. She'll pin down the emotion once she's crossed the line (to the shock and uncertainty of the parents, all of whom assume she's too old for Santa but still noting with distaste how she squeezes her way to the front, saddling the main line).]
N-nee-san!!

1/...idek 26? Does it matter??? Let's boomerang hard
Until some young woman seemed to all but bumble her way down one of the passages to the subway she was walking past. The girl looked like she was just in work or street clothes or something and the small woman frowned as the other went down there, though Elda can't see why...
Mmmmmrrrr...
You know what, she should check to make sure whoever that was is okay. She slides in after her. ]
1/26 sounds good!
After working various jobs and collecting her pay, it was just supposed to be a simple walk home until passing by the subway, a gust of wind tore the envelope out of her hands. Warnings she'd seen on the app about this place flashing through her mind, she'd only hesitated a second before dashing in after it, cautious but still hurried.]
Come on...! [Hissing to herself, her voice and footsteps echo off concrete all the same.] No one has time for these stupid cliches!
[It's not on the stairs... Did it really fall off the side? The girl picks up her pace, hurrying to the bottom of the steps.]
no subject
Elda doesn't have a light source unlike most people and she all but swoops down the steps after the other, because right now she's running a risk of being attacked by vines or rats or something and Elda isn't about to let that happen to her. Particularly if she's not even on the app and just going in there ignorantly.
But let's.
Go.
She doesn't speak up though, just sort of hurries after for now as we head into the dark subway. ]

How would you like to help us help you out? Your observation period's up and I want you on this particular assignment. You'll be fine, you're probably not going to die, and we'll be able to monitor you from here. We need help. You've got the skills needed even if you don't know it yet. I know it and that's what counts.
You'll be working with a group (wish I could give you the names, still putting the lists together), but your assignment partner is Kara Lee. Should you choose to accept this assignment, you will need to meet at the subway and we'll go from there.
You'll be rewarded for your success, of course, but this is only if we have an agreement. Do we have an agreement?
[No other messages will be sent from this account at this time.]
[ooc: Hello! You've been sorted into group 2. Your event log will go up at 9pm EST along with all of the other logs. We encourage you to read the main event log as well for more information about your recruiter and this note. In the meantime, head over to this thread on the latest mod post to meet your teammates. Thank you!]

....yeah, so naturally she's still awake. She wasn't expecting to be shipped out, sue her; there's no fixing her sleep schedule on that short notice. Rin cracks one eye open when her phone buzzes beside her, thinks to ignore it for the sake of being well-rested, aaaaand... promptly gives up on that idea, knowing she's good and awake.
Huh. I don't know this number...]
Oh, I think she mentioned you. You're her roommate, right?
What's wrong with her?

And after she thinks it through, she never actually got to introduce Rin to Sakura. Not to mention she owes her a meetup anyway, considering they had to take a rain cheque on their plans for February.
So--]
hey, rin
you doing anything tomorrow?
no subject
[JUDGING BY THE LATENESS OF THE REPLY... It takes a few hours for Rin to see this message, somewhere between catching up on all the homework she missed and crunching a co-worker's taxes for some extra money.]
But Sundays are usually slow, so I should be around in the evening for once. You want to meet up?

But only if you are feeling ready.

Not sure.
You're so foreboding, it makes me wonder if I need booze.
[And then about five seconds later:]
Before you get on my case, that's a joke.

5/11 afternoon, tw child death talk
Shinji had tried not to complain too much. No, it wasn't fair, but it's not like his parents could fix anything about it. Rin thought he was mature and he didn't want to prove her wrong by acting childish. He could deal with all of this and impress his whole family.
This afternoon, shortly after getting home, he remembered something.
I get killed or the world gets killed. I’d never thought about which of those would scare me more, and I never wanted to, but —
Curled up on the outline of his bed, Shinji texts his cousins.]
are you there
bad memory
